Patio Covers, Pergolas & Decks in Englewood, CO
Building a Patio Cover, Pergola or Deck in Englewood: What to Know
Englewood is on the 2024 International Codes for permits submitted after May 31, 2026. Englewood's design criteria use a 30 psf ground snow load, a 30 psf roof snow load that can't be reduced, and a 36-inch frost depth.
When you need a permit:
- Patio covers: a building permit is required, and zoning approval is required for every project.
- Small freestanding structures: "minor structures" up to 200 sq ft (two per lot) don't need a building permit but still go through zoning site plan review.
- Decks: no building permit if the deck is under 200 sq ft, detached, no more than 30 inches above grade and not serving an exit door. Zoning approval still applies.
Small lots mean setbacks matter. Many Englewood lots are compact. No part of a patio cover can be closer than 2 feet to the property line, and walls, posts or overhangs within 5 feet need 1-hour fire-rated construction. We lay the cover out to get you the most shade within those limits.
We submit plans through Englewood's online permit system and handle inspections.

Only up to a point. It must stay at least 2 feet from the property line, and anything within 5 feet needs fire-rated construction.
Is a small pergola permit-free in Englewood?
A freestanding structure up to 200 sq ft usually skips the building permit, but it still needs zoning site plan review.
