Patio Covers, Pergolas & Decks in Broomfield, CO
Building a Patio Cover, Pergola or Deck in Broomfield: What to Know
Permits in Broomfield come from the City and County of Broomfield Building Division in Community Development. Broomfield adopted the 2024 building codes (Ordinance 2295) for new permits starting April 15, 2026. Its design criteria use a 36-inch frost depth, with wind speeds set by ASCE 7.
When you need a permit:
- Patio covers and sunrooms: roofed additions attached to the home go through building permit review.
- Decks and pergolas: Broomfield follows the International Residential Code's list of exempt work. Most attached decks and covers need a permit, and small freestanding structures may be exempt.
Snow load changed with the 2024 codes. Broomfield's older design criteria listed a 30 psf ground and roof snow load, and the 2024 code update appears to raise it. Because snow load decides beam and post sizes, we confirm the current number with the city before we design your cover.
Broomfield has its own contractor licensing. Call the Building Division to confirm current requirements for your project.
