Patio Covers, Pergolas & Decks in Boulder, CO
Building a Patio Cover, Pergola or Deck in Boulder: What to Know
Permits in Boulder come from the city's Planning & Development Services through the Customer Self-Service portal. Boulder adopted the 2024 International Codes with local amendments effective August 1, 2025, and uses its own energy code (the 2024 City of Boulder Energy Conservation Code).
When you need a permit:
- Pergolas and freestanding shade: Boulder only exempts detached structures under 80 sq ft, under 10 feet tall and with no electrical, plumbing or mechanical work. Most pergolas need a permit.
- Decks: attached and freestanding decks need a permit. Decks over 30 inches tall also need a lot-area form and a zoning worksheet.
- Patio covers and covered decks: these go through the city's Additions and Alterations checklist.
Boulder has three things other cities don't. Wind speeds are high: 150 mph east of Broadway and 165 mph west of it. Homes in the mapped wildland-urban interface area fall under the 2024 wildfire code (IWUIC). And in historic districts you need a Landmark Alteration Certificate before the building permit. Structures over 12 feet may also need a solar access analysis in some zones.
Contractors need a City of Boulder license. Confirm the details with Planning & Development Services before you build.

Built for Colorado's Climate, Permitted for Your City.
Colorado's intense UV, heavy spring snow loads, hail, and rapid freeze-thaw cycles demand structures engineered specifically for the Front Range. Our patio covers, pergolas, screen rooms, and decks are built with materials and fastening methods rated for these conditions, so your outdoor shade structure holds up season after season.
Each municipality, from Denver to Aurora, Arvada, Westminster, Thornton, Lakewood, Littleton, Centennial, and Highlands Ranch, has its own permitting rules, setback requirements, and HOA design standards. Our team handles the paperwork and inspections so homeowners don't have to navigate it alone.
